从短片里可以看到，在悉尼闹市街头，一个化名Juan Mann的年轻人，举着一张写着"FREE HUGS"的纸牌，向来往的行人提供拥抱。从最初无人理睬，到渐渐有人接受，有越来越多人加入进来响应。然后，警察干预进来，禁止了这一活动。然后，Juan Mann和他的伙伴们收集了一万个请愿签名，提交给市议会希望FREE HUGS能继续下去。短片的最后，人们拥抱了警官。
Juan Mann其实只是这个年轻人的化名，它的读音和One Man一样。他形容，"FREE HUGS"传递的是一种快餐式的情感（fast-food emotion），是一种让人们微笑的方法。他一直坚持的原则是，不透露姓名，不留电话号码，不发生关系，不搞约会。他说："每给出一个拥抱，你将看到五个路过的人面带微笑。"
我觉得倒不是拥抱这个动作本身传递了多少东西，只是这份简单而纯真的激情让人感动。
这则短片的制作者是Sick Puppies乐队，片中的背景音乐"All the Same"就是他们的作品。一年多前，Sick Puppies的主唱Shimon Moore还是那种白天在购物中心挂着夹板做宣传广告的小职员，晚上组band演奏唱歌的不知名歌手，他认识Juan Mann后，成了他的伙伴，于是借来父亲的摄像机拍下了这些片段。Sick Puppies说把这些片段剪辑制作成是短片放上网，是要向更多人分享和传递Free Hugs的理念（或者，顺便推广一下他们的歌）。从9月22日发布到今天已经超过一百七十万的点击率，这则短片迅速而广泛地感动着越来越多的人。这也说明在这个网络高度发达的时代， 实打实的默默苦干一年可能还是没什么人知道，但是一放上网用不了几天就全世界都知道了。
另外，我上网搜索的时候发现Free Hugs最早并非由Juan Mann发起的，而是一个叫Jason Hunter的美国人。2001年在他的母亲的葬礼上，听到人们缅怀她喜欢与人拥抱的经历，从而受到启发，开始带着一张写着"FREE HUGS"的牌子走上街头，而且他要传递的信息也有所不同，是为了"letting every single person know that they matter"。不过此"拥抱"非彼"拥抱"并不仅于此，Jason Hunter把"FREE HUGS"办成了一家"Social Experience company"，而且还不是一个"non-profit entity"（非盈利性机构），从它的网站的faq上可以看到如下一段劝人买东西的话：
